Most ostomy patients leave the hospital with a pouching system, a few supplies, and a long list of questions—but too often, they’re not introduced to one of the most life-changing tools available: an ostomy support belt.
For many, these belts can mean the difference between surviving with an ostomy and thriving with one.
As someone who lives with an ostomy and has helped thousands of ostomates regain their confidence, I’ve seen firsthand—and felt—how critical support belts can be to recovery, comfort, and long-term wellness.
1. What the Research Says: Belts Improve Quality of Life
In a landmark 2021 study published in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing (Pittman et al.), researchers found that:
71% of ostomates reported improved pouch security 66% experienced fewer leaks and appliance shifting Over 60% felt more comfortable returning to activities and reported improved body image
These aren’t just numbers—they’re proof that support belts help people live more confidently, more actively, and more comfortably after ostomy surgery.
2. Nurses Are the Frontline of Recovery
WOC (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence) nurses and surgical nurses are in the best position to introduce support belts as part of standard post-op care. That single conversation can lead to:
Fewer post-op leaks Less pouch detachment Greater patient satisfaction and confidence Reduced anxiety about going out in public or exercising Better long-term skin health and hernia prevention
Many ostomates never learn about belts until months—or years—after surgery, often after experiencing discomfort or complications that could have been prevented.
3. Why We Designed the Stealth Band
The Stealth Band was created because standard solutions weren’t cutting it. After living through the challenges of traveling, exercising, working, and raising kids with an ostomy, I needed something more supportive, discreet, and durable.
So I built it—from the ground up—with real-life function in mind:
Breathable materials that feel good against skin A low-profile look that disappears under clothing Strong support that keeps the bag in place without blocking output Enough flexibility to be worn during exercise, daily activities, and sleep
It’s not just about appearance. It’s about confidence, freedom, and feeling normal again.
4. When Should Nurses Recommend an Ostomy Belt?
Any time a patient shows signs of discomfort, insecurity, or increased physical activity, it’s worth recommending a belt. Specifically, when:
The patient has an active lifestyle or is returning to work They’ve experienced pouch sagging or shifting They are concerned about leaks or skin irritation They want more discretion under clothes There is a risk of developing a parastomal hernia
Ostomy belts provide both preventive support and day-to-day comfort.
5. How to Help Patients Get the Most Out of Their Belt
Here are a few tips you can share or keep in mind when guiding a patient:
Ensure a proper fit: It should be snug but never constricting. Encourage regular use: Wearing it daily gives the best long-term results. Wash and rotate: Hygiene is essential—just like with any undergarment. Adjust for activity: Some may wear a tighter fit for workouts and a softer version for sleep. Pair with good pouching technique: Belts don’t replace a good seal—but they enhance it.
6. Built for Life, Backed by Science
Ostomy belts aren’t luxury accessories—they’re medically beneficial tools that support both physical health and mental well-being. As research shows, they help reduce:
Appliance complications Psychosocial distress Activity avoidance Skin breakdown Hernia development
And they increase:
Confidence Physical function Sleep quality Social engagement Overall quality of life
7. Helping Patients Take the Next Step
If you’re a nurse, surgeon, or ostomy care provider, you have the chance to positively impact your patient’s recovery—not just for the next week, but for the rest of their life. Recommending a support belt as part of their post-op education helps normalize recovery and empowers them to live actively.
